Mathematics

My passion for problem solving that developed in high school calculus extended into my studies at Swarthmore College, where I pursued and completed a minor in mathematics.  Department faculty encouraged me to pursue more difficult classes, and I eventually completed my "rite of passage" by taking Abstract Algebra and Real Analysis, finishing the minor and solidifying my interest in algebra above calculus.  Courses in linear algebra complemented future studies in computer science and multivariable calculus, all of which enhanced my problem solving strategies.

Favorite Courses: Abstract Algebra, Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations

Interpretation Theory

Interpretation Theory, loosely described on Swarthmore's website, is an emergent interdisciplinary field concerned with the human perspective's influence on philosophy and art.  I declared a Special Major in Interpretation Theory at Swarthmore, meaning I designed my own ten-course curriculum with approval from several department chairs.  My studies, specifically concerned with applications of modern philosophy to the field of art history, were boiled down to a single catchy thesis:  what will we call the contemporary art period?  Answering this question required knowledge of art history, modern and postmodern philosophy, and postmodern cultural trends.  I developed rigorous analytical skills in the humanities which continue to inform my consumption of media.

Favorite Courses: Cracking Visual Codes, Truth and Desire, Ancient Apocalypse, Poststructuralism

Comparative Religion

At FIU, I decided to study Comparative Religion as an extension of my experience with Interpretation Theory.  Written and oral traditions can provide insights into the history and cultural frameworks of different societies around the world, and FIU's strong ties to its community provided me with a unique opportunity to learn about local traditions.  My interest in non-doctrinal religious traditions was enthusiastically bolstered by several professors, and the diversity of courses provided by the university strengthened my knowledge of global culture.
